It's only January and I've already decided that I need a mulligan on my Top 12 Albums of 2008 countdown. This is exactly why I hate making lists of my favorite music because it is impossible to remember every album and what happens when you overlook a band all together? One might say that this must mean that you didn't really like them otherwise they would have been on your list. What if you just never heard it? There is too much good music out there just waiting to be found and that is the biggest shortcoming of any list that claims itself to be definitive.
This past Tuesday I was driving to work and listening to a podcast of someone's list of top songs of 2008. The podcaster, Mr. Paul Shirley says, "Here is my number 2 song of 2008 called Sometime Around Midnight by The Airborne Toxic Event." The Airborne Toxic Event, I think to myself, where have I heard of these guys? As I listen to the song I realize that this might be one of the greatest songs mine ears have heard in some time. I then remember that I had recently noticed in my downloaded music folder this very band, yet for some reason I had never given them a listen. I always figured it must have been some sort of metal band or something I had downloaded while in a Yerba Mate haze. Once I got to work I immediately downloaded the song I had just heard and proceeded to listen to it approximately 172 times in a row (give or take 160 times). Needless to say I checked for the band as soon as I got home and sure enough I had downloaded the album on Sept 7, 2008 at 6:51 pm. I had deprived myself and the good readers of the Skog Blog of these tunes for 4 months, 3 weeks and a few hours. To make ammends I offer these olive branches - a bunch of their tunes and an invite to Skog Blog Meet n Greet 2...
If you like what you have heard from The Airborne Toxic Event please join Wheels and I for Skog Blog Meet n Greet - 2. Saturday, February 21st. Tix are only $15 with all applicable service charges. Here is the link:

In a burst of enthusiasm for the return of the Skog Blog and the possibility of an additional M 'n G, I logged on to eMusic and downloaded the ATE album. I will report back after I have given it a proper listen.
Okay, Mr. Gyllenskog. You have converted me. I have listened all morning, and I am "in" for your soiree. There isn't a bad song on the album. "Missy" is another standout. These guys are going to kick a$$ live. I can feel it in my cilia.
Whateve the duration is of a flight from Salt Lake City to New York, (roughly four hours?), this is how long I listened to the song Sometime Around Midnight this week...over and over and over. Incredible.
Oh, and go Steelers!!!
First off, no more Black and Gold propaganda...
Second, I think if I were to adjust my Top 12 this album would move to #3 on my list which would bump My Morning Jacket out of the Top 12. Anybody who knows how much I love MMJ knows that the equivalent of this action would be if I were a high school basketball coach and some hotshot player moved in the first week of the season forcing me to cut my own son from the team. That is how much I enjoy this album, as Vanwarmer said, not a bad track on it.
I usually frequent the skogblog while on conf. calls, only participating with distracted "uh huh" and the like. Thanks to this I had to mute myself and participate with the two second delay that happens while trying to remember how to un-mute the line and then sound like you were there the whole time... good music leading me astray.
